The First Day School’s Corner of the World: November 2023

November is here with shorter days and longer evenings; winter clothes are coming out and hot beverages are keeping us warm.
It has been amazing to see the energy and generosity the Friends of EFM have shown regarding the asylum-seeking family moving into EFM’s apartment. The care and consideration and getting everything in order has been an inspiration of action. Another inspiration of loving care by Friends of EFM has been the work and support to Phyllis R. in preparation of her move to Michigan. It has made me think of all the people who are alone and without the support from family, friends or a community. Giving of ourselves, volunteering your time, care, as well as providing financial support – which can be done in so many ways – is good for our mental and spiritual health. Researchers have concluded that people who volunteer, donate and are involved and engaged with others, are happier, more able to recognize potential and are more focused on constructive and peaceful solutions than those who cannot or do not.
We can be grateful for when the opportunity to serve others present itself. Give thanks that we have the ability to be generous with our love and care. It does not always have to be a big deal. It can be small things, small everyday actions.
October was busy and all our classes are going along. I had the opportunity to teach in Intermediate and we worked on the village… it was so much fun! When the village is completed, we will invite you to come and look for yourself. Primary class is moving along with its stories and sometimes we get students who are not yet ready for Intermediate. We are so fortunate to be able to accommodate the needs of our students, our children and not forcing them attend something they are not ready for. Leaving them with love and feeling of safety associated with FDS and EFM. Middle School students are growing up! So proud of them! Guest teachers in Middle School November 5th are Emma D. and Aimee R., the NU student who was a guest teacher in the spring. Our youngest students are, as always, just adorable.
Planning ahead…. Mark your calendar for Sunday, November 12, 3 pm-5 pm for a Firepit and Story Telling with Friends. We will be inviting a few other Friends…. More information to come from Charlotta & Karen!
While writing this I am in Sweden, helping and spending time with my mother, and I will admit, I wish she had the community support of EFM. I will be back in Evanston by Sunday, November 12; meanwhile I can be reached via email during. Members of the RE committee are, as always, available should need be.
